  1. Day Trip: A Voice of the Wind People

    September 22, 2018, 1:30 PM - September 23, 2018, 12:30 AM @ Antioch Park

    History will come alive on this day trip. Tour the Kaw Mission Museum, followed by the dinner at the 1857 Hays House Restaurant. Spend the evening outside at the old Neosho riverbed near downtown Council Grove watching A Voice of the Wind People Pageant. The Pageant depicting the clash of the Native Americans and Euro Americans in council grove on the Santa Fee trail. This bi-annual pageant is performed by 45 Kanza Indians who once lived in Council Grove and local volunteers. The performance will include wagon trains, a stage-coach, tepees and much more. Please bring a lawn chair.

  1. Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club’s Float Fly

    The public is invited to come watch as radio-controlled aircraft take off and land on the water at Shawnee Mission Park Lake when the Shawnee Mission Remote Control Club (SMRCC) conducts its 5th Annual Float Fly. This event, which is free for spectators to attend, will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. near Shelter #6 on the northwest side of the lake near the dam.   2. Flight of the Monarch

    September 22, 2018, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Ernie Miller Nature Center

    Celebrate the Monarch butterfly’s amazing annual migration. Join us in capturing, tagging, and releasing them to continue their journey to Mexico. Learn about these amazing insects and other native butterflies. Wear long pants to protect your legs as you run through the prairie and closed toed shoes to protect your feet. We have a limited number of insect nets, so you are welcome to bring your own. You will get tags to take home. Advance reservations required. Registration for this event closes on Sept. 21. This program is recommended for ages 8 and older, and all children must be accompanied by parent/guardian or one adult chaperone per group of 5.

  3. Big Bull Creek Park Grand Opening

    September 22, 2018, 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM @ Big Bull Creek Park

    Bring the entire family and help us celebrate the grand opening of JCPRD’s newest park! Light refreshments and giveaways provided while supplies last. The ribbon cutting will take place at 11 am at the Sunflower Road access point. Following the ribbon cutting, the park police substation/park maintenance facility and the organized group camp area will be open. Other highlights of the park include; a nature play area, three-quarter-mile paved trail, prairie restoration area, and an 18-hole disc golf course.

  4. Fall Group Hayrides - Oak Ridge Parklands @ SMP

    Times: Monday - Thursday: 4 pm or 6 pm; Fridays: 4 pm, 6 pm, 7:30 pm, and 9 pm; Saturdays: 2:30 pm, 4 pm, 5:30 pm, 7 pm, and 8:30 pm; Sundays: 2:30 pm, 4 pm, 5:30 pm, and 7 pm

    Enjoy the outdoors by scheduling your group for a hayride through Oak Ridge Parklands in Shawnee Mission Park. Our hayrides conclude with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await. The one-hour hayride and one-hour campfire are just $7 per person, and groups will need to reach an $80 minimum for their ride. Hayrides are available at Shawnee Mission Park seven days a week Call (913) 831-3359 to reserve a date and time for your group. Two weeks advance registration is required.
