  1. Flight of the Monarch

    Celebrate the Monarch butterfly’s amazing annual migration. Join us in capturing, tagging, and releasing them to continue their journey to Mexico. Learn about these amazing insects and other native butterflies. Wear long pants to protect your legs as you run through the prairie and closed toed shoes to protect your feet. We have a limited number of insect nets, so you are welcome to bring your own. You will get tags to take home. Advance reservations required. Registration for this event closes on Sept. 21. This program is recommended for ages 8 and older, and all children must be accompanied by parent/guardian or one adult chaperone per group of 5.

  2. 50 Plus Monarch Migration

    Be a part of one of the world’s greatest migrations. Learn about the incredible journey of these butterflies while engaging in a tagging demonstration. Receive three tags to tag butterflies in the park or in your own yard. Bring your walking shoes and enjoy the trails after the event. A light breakfast will be served.

  3. Nature Time Yoga (Ages 2-6 with Adult)

    Music, movement and imagination!!! Join the nature center staff as we act out stories with animal and yoga moves. These parent and child experiences are designed to encourage creativity, coordination and enhance awareness of the natural world. All children must be accompanied by a participating adult. See a live animal every time.

  4. Cub Scouts Bear Adventure

    September 29, 2018, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Ernie Miller Nature Center

    Take a one-mile hike and visit stations along the way to earn your Fur, Feathers and Ferns Adventure. See some of the live nature center animals up-close and observe the wildlife in the park with binoculars. See a working compost bin and worm bin and learn about composting. Learn about extinct and endangered animals. Smell and taste herbs and plant an herb to take home.

  5. Fall Public Hayride

    September 30, 2018, 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM @ Oak Ridge Parklands at Shawnee Mission Park

    In addition to fall hayrides for organized groups, JCPRD offers this annual opportunity for individuals and family members to enjoy the crisp autumn air from a tractor-drawn haywagon without having to worry about reaching minimum numbers or placing a deposit. Like the group program, this hayride will last approximately one hour, and will be followed by a one-hour campfire with apple cider and marshmallows. The cost is just $7 per person. Participants will meet at Site A at Oak Ridge at Shawnee Mission Park. Advance registration is required by Sept. 28.
