Shawnee Mission Park

The park land was purchased through the District's initial bond issue in 1956 and officially dedicated on May 30, 1964. It is the largest park in the county and the most visited park in the entire state of Kansas.

Notice: The Shawnee Mission Park Off-Leash Area is now open, however, the fence installation is not complete.  Pardon the mess as we continue improvements to the area.

Dog Off-Leash Area

A fun place for your canine family member to run and play! Located east of the observation tower on John Barkley Drive, the 44-acre off-leash area features a dog swim area along with a new paved trail to the lake and wood chip and natural surface trails through grassland and wooded areas. Our off-leash area also includes paved parking and portable toilets. The off-leash area will soon be totally enclosed with fencing.

The area is open year-round during regular park hours except every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., when it is closed for routine maintenance. During maintenance closures (every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m.), our intention is to conduct a higher level of maintenance to the area without compromising dog and patron safety. Trespassing is prohibited when the gate is locked.

For the enjoyment of all patrons and pets all JCPRD Dog Off-Leash Area Code of Conduct/Rules (PDF) apply.

JCPRD has a total of four dog off-leash areas. Other off-leash areas are located in Heritage Park, Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park and Kill Creek Streamway Park (at the 95th Street access point). Each off-leash area offers an enclosed, fenced area.

Observation Tower - Closed

The observation tower was closed to public access in January of 2017. The tower has significant structural deficiencies and has unfortunately reached a point where repair is not practical. The existing tower will not be re-opened.

The tower has been a popular destination at Shawnee Mission Park since it was constructed in 1964. JCPRD is looking at options to construct a new observation tower in Shawnee Mission Park, and part of this process will include opportunities for public input and comment.
