A new special event where participants can take part in-person in craft activities and virtually check in with Santa from the North Pole is being offered five times on Dec. 12 and 13 at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center. This event will be socially distanced and the space will be sanitized between sessions. Guidelines from the Johnson County Health Department and the Johnson County Park and Recreation District in place at the time of the event will be adhered to.
During these Santa's Virtual Workshops, Santa will use some very fancy elf technology to virtually check in live from his workshop at the north pole as participants make holiday-themed crafts and community holiday cards. He even has a special cookie gift for guests to take with them as they exit the workshop. There is no age limit for the craft/cookie set! Children of all ages are welcome to participate or help the younger children at their table complete their crafts.
To find this program online at JCPRD.com/Activities, browse first under fun for all and then under special events. When using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword “Santa’s.”
Santa's Virtual Workshops are priced by the table, which can seat up to four people and include two sets of crafts and two take-home cookie decorating kits. Groups at tables will not be combined to fill tables. This arrangement, rather than individual tickets, allows for physical distancing of the event space and lets participants decide who will join them for a new holiday tradition! The cost is $30 per table for each one-hour session.
Sessions are offered on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m. (activity number 7222) noon (activity number 7942) and 2 p.m. (activity number 7943) and on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 1:30 p.m. (activity number 7945) and 3:30 p.m. (activity number 7946). For more information or to register by phone, call (913) 831-3359. To register online at JCPRD.com, click on “Activity Search,” and search for any of the activity numbers listed above. Additional craft/cookie sets can be purchased for an additional fee of $10 at checkout.
An additional activity to enjoy before or after participating in the workshop on Dec. 12, is a visit to the Johnson County Museum and KidScape, which are both also located within the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center at 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.
With their admission to Santa's Virtual Workshop for Dec. 12, participants will receive a coupon for $1 off admission for up to eight guests for that day only to the Johnson County Museum, which is also located within the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center at 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. The museum’s 1954 All-Electric House will be decked out for the holidays, and visitors can enjoy the sparkle of an aluminum tree, the glow of big bulb light strings, and the nostalgia of the vintage décor throughout the house. As a special treat on Dec. 12, a refurbished 1949 Lionel train set will be running under the tree from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The museum coupon code will print at the bottom of receipts for Dec. 12 Santa's Virtual Workshops. Reservations are required for museum admission.
