Construction of a new restroom building at the dog off-leash area in Shawnee Mission Park is expected to get under way in early October, Johnson County Park and Recreation District officials announced.
“This dog off-leash area is an extremely popular amenity at Shawnee Mission Park, and in an effort to provide convenience for patrons, we are working to build an on-site, accessible restroom facility,” said JCPRD Project Manager Mark Allen.
The new restroom, to be located inside the off-leash area fence north of the parking lot, will involve the placement of a prefabricated restroom building constructed by CXT Inc. of a concrete pad being built on-site. When complete, the building will have four individual restrooms. The project will also involve the construction of a 40- by 60-foot septic field north and the restroom and west of the main paved trail. When finished, this septic field will be a fenced mowed area.
The restroom project is expected to begin the week of Oct 5, and should be finished and landscaped by spring 2021, although the restroom may go into service earlier.
While the immediate areas of construction will be fenced off, impact on off-leash area users is expected to be minimal because the project’s staging area in all within the off-leash area, so no parking obstructions are anticipated initially. The parking lot will be partially closer later in the project when part of the lot is repaved, and the entry sidewalk is replaced.
