Three fitness programs with SilverSneakers®, Prime Health options begin Aug. 11 & 13

Three separate fitness programs that are free to people eligible for the SilverSneakers® benefit or who are Prime Fitness and Fitness Your Way members are being offered beginning Aug. 11 and 13 by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District. 

The programs are: SilverSneakers®/Prime Classic, SilverSneakers®/Prime Circuit, and SilverSneakers®/Prime Yoga. All three of these low-impact programs are for ages 18 and older and will take place at the Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Drive, Shawnee. Social distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged during these programs.

The SilverSneakers® benefit, which is included with many Medicare plans, is for adults age 65 and older, and gives eligible seniors access to participating fitness centers and select classes. Prime Fitness is most commonly made available through an employer health plan, and Fitness Your Way is available to members and their dependents over age 18 who have healthcare coverage with a participating Blue365 plan. Each of the fitness programs listed above also have rates for participants who are not eligible for SilverSneakers® or Prime Health benefits.

To find these programs in the My JCPRD Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under adult and then under fitness & health. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword “SilverSneakers.”

SilverSneakers®/Prime Classic is designed to increase muscle strength, and range of movement, and improve activities for daily living. A chair is used for seated exercises and standing support. This class can be modified depending on fitness levels.  This class begins Aug. 11 and meets at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. For those who are not eligible for SilverSneakers® or Prime Fitness, the cost for five 50-minute sessions is $30 per person for Johnson County residents or $33 for nonresidents. The course ID for this class is 31469.

SilverSneakers®/Prime Circuit offers a workout which involves standing, low-impact choreography alternated with standing upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers® ball. A chair is available for standing support. The class beginning Aug. 13 meets at 9:30 a.m. on Thursdays. For those who are not eligible for SilverSneakers® or Prime Fitness, the cost for five 50-minute sessions is $30 per person for Johnson County residents or $33 for nonresidents. The course ID for this class is 31444.

SilverSneakers®/Prime Yoga lets participants get ready to move through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to help in the performance of a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance, and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity. This class is suitable for nearly every fitness level.  This program offers both Tuesday and Thursday classes beginning in mid-August. A class beginning Aug. 11 meets at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesdays (course ID 31504), while the class beginning Aug. 13 meets at 8:30 a.m. on Thursdays (course ID 31506). For those who are not eligible for SilverSneakers® or Prime Fitness, the cost for five 50-minute sessions is $30 per person for Johnson County residents or $33 for nonresidents.
