Gary L. Haller Trail is destination for 50 Plus Walking Club outings in March & April

50 Plus MCSP Trail Hike

Explore the Gary L. Haller Trail in the Mill Creek Streamway Park during an eight-session weekly walking program being launched by the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District in early March.

Titled simply Mill Creek Streamway’s Gary L. Haller Trail, this program will meet at a different trailhead along the Gary L. Haller Trail during eight weeks in March and April. Every other week, walkers will be guided by a staff member, then complete one week as a group on their own. These walks are expected to involve an easy level of exertion. This program aims to let walkers complete the 17+ mile trail over the course of eight weeks and receive a T-shirt to prove it!

The Gary L. Haller Trail consists of 17 miles of pedestrian and bicycle trail stretching from the Kansas River south through the cities of Shawnee and Lenexa, and ending in Olathe. Walkers will enjoy views of Mill Creek and the Kansas River.  The linear trail was designated in 2010 as a National Recreation Trail (NRT). A regional tourist attraction and a model trail for other communities in the region, it is the first trail in Johnson County to be honored with the NRT designation.

To find this program in the My JCPRD Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under 50 Plus and then under nature & outdoors. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords "Social Walks.”

Each one-hour outing will take place beginning at 8 a.m. on a Monday from a different trailhead. JCPRD staff will provide a schedule of meeting points once participants are registered.  The cost for eight one-hour outings is $20 per person for Johnson County residents or $22 for nonresidents. For more information  or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register for the Gary L. Haller Trail walk at www.jcprd.com, complete a course ID 27758.

While JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at (913) 826-3030 for space availability.

The My JCPRD Activities catalog is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches.
