Youth can join their friends on an adventure into art during four different homeschool programs being offered by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District beginning in mid- to late January.

Homeschool Art is the name of these programs, which are designed to supplement homeschool curriculums. Participants will have collaborative experiences meant to encourage them to explore art through consideration, conversation, and creation. All three programs take place at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online at www.jcprd.com, click on “Register for Activities,” and complete a course ID search for the codes listed below. For a more specific curriculum and questions, please contact devin.graham@jocogov.org.

Art Adventures I and II are both for ages six to 17, and both classes meet on Thursdays beginning Jan. 9. Art Adventures I (course ID 27810) meets at 10 a.m., while Art Adventures II (course ID 27811) meets at 1 p.m. For either class, the cost for ten two-hour sessions is $100 per person for Johnson County residents or $110 for nonresidents.

Also being offered are single-session Homeschool Art Artist Study classes where students ages six and older will explore the works of a specific artist. These all take place beginning at 1 p.m. on Fridays, and in January include a session on Jackson Pollock on Jan. 17 (course ID 27827) and Pablo Picasso on Jan. 31 (course ID 27828). The cost for these two-hour programs are $10 per person for Johnson County residents or $11 per person for nonresidents. Other Artist Study programs coming up later this season will include: Helen Frankenthaler on Feb. 21 (course ID 27829), Alexander Calder on March 27 (course ID 27833), and Georgia O'Keeffe on April 17 (course ID 27834).

Other Homeschool Art offerings coming up later this season include Clay Creations, which has sessions for ages six to 11 beginning March 25 (course ID 27815) and sessions for ages 11 and older beginning March 26 (course ID 27816). A course called Potter's Wheel for ages eight to 12 beginning March 25 (course ID 27818) and sessions for ages 13 and older beginning March 26 (course ID 27820). For either of these clay-related programs, the cost for six two-and-one-half-hour sessions is $80 per person for Johnson County residents or $90 per person for nonresidents.
