Pre-competitive and competitive Stingrays Swim Teams for youth begin May 28

Stingrays Swim Team

Both pre-competitive and competitive summer swim teams for ages six to 19 are being offered by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District beginning in late May.

The teams include Pre-Competitive Stingrays for ages six to eight, and Competitive Stingrays for ages seven to 11, and 12 to 19. Programs for all age groups begin May 28 at the Roeland Park Aquatic Center, 4843 Rosewood Dr.,  Roeland Park. None of the programs will have practice on July 4. Parent meetings for all three age groups will take place beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the RPCC.  SwimQuik will also be attending the parent meetings where team suits will be available for purchase.

To find these programs in the My JCPRD Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under youth and then under aquatics. In the printed catalog and when using the website’s advanced search,  look for the keywords “swim team.” For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. The Pre-Competitive Stingrays program provides a transition from swim lessons to a swim team. Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle and 25 yards of backstroke on the first day.  Professional swim coaches will help swimmers refine these strokes and learn breaststroke and butterfly.  Introduction to competition is offered through low-key swim meets specifically designed for this level within the Johnson County Swim and Dive League.  Registration for this program includes all league fees and a Stingrays team swim cap and T-shirt.

This program meets at 11:15 a.m. for 40-minute practices Monday through Friday beginning May 28 for five weeks. The cost is $67 per person for Johnson County residents or $74 for nonresidents.

The Competitive Stingrays are a recreational summer swim team based at RPAC.  It is recommended that participants be familiar with all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.  Swimmers will compete by age group in Thursday night meets within the Johnson County Swim and Dive League. Registration includes all league fees and a Stingrays team swim cap and T-shirt.

For ages seven to 11, the program meets at 10 a.m. for 70-minute practices Monday through Friday beginning May 28 for seven weeks. The cost is $85 per person for Johnson County residents or $94 for nonresidents. For ages 12 to 19, the program meets at 8:30 a.m. for 90-minute practices Monday through Friday, also beginning May 28 for seven weeks. The cost is $80 per person for Johnson County residents or $88 for nonresidents.
