The public is invited to come watch as thousands of pounds of rainbow trout are stocked in two JCPRD lakes in late February. The lake locations are: Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe, and Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa.
Approximately 5,400 pounds of rainbow trout will be stocked in the two lakes on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Stockings will include of about 1,600 pounds of trout at Kill Creek beginning at 2:30 p.m., and 3,800 pounds of trout at Shawnee Mission Park beginning at 3:45 p.m. at the respective park's boat ramp.
If you’d like to avoid big crowds, consider attending the stocking at Kill Creek Park, where these events often draw far fewer spectators than the ever-popular Shawnee Mission Park stockings.
Following the stockings, both lakes will be closed to fishing until the official beginning of the 2019 trout season at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23.
Additional supplemental Spring Break Trout Stockings at both lakes are planned for Friday, March 8. Those stockings will involve another 2,000 pounds of trout and will close those lakes to fishing until 5 a.m. on Saturday, March 9.
Before fishing for trout in district waters, anglers age 16 and older will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park and Recreation District fishing permit, and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable. All persons, regardless of age or residency, must also possess a JCPRD trout permit. Trout permits are required whether you plan to keep your catch (up to a daily limit of four) or release the trout you catch. District fishing permits are available at: the JCPRD Registration Office, Building D, 6501 Antioch Road, at the Visitors Services counter in the JCPRD Administration Building in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa; and at local sporting goods outlets.
