Have some fun with Horton, The Cat in the Hat, Mayzie La Bird, and the Whos

"Oh, the thinks you can think" when Dr. Seuss' best-loved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper in the final musical production of Theatre in the Park’s 2023 season. 

“Seussical the Musical” begins Dec. 8 and runs through Dec. 23 at The Black Box Theatre located inside the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. 

In this musical comedy, which has now become one of the most-performed shows in America, The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, who he must protect while also guarding an egg left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

Seussical 2022 Bird Girls“Seussical the Musical,” will be presented 12 times. Each show will last about 2 hours, including a 15-minute intermission. Evening performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are scheduled for Dec. 8, 14, 15, 21, and 22, while shows beginning at 2 p.m. on three Saturdays and one Sunday, are planned for Dec. 9, 16, 17, and 23. New for this year are 10 a.m. Saturday performances on Dec. 9, 16, and 23.  Interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing will be present for the 2 p.m.   performance on Saturday, Dec. 16.

For performances beginning at 10 a.m. or 7:30 p.m., tickets are $14 for children ages 10 and under, $15 for seniors 60 and older, and $17 for adults 11 to 59. Admission costs for afternoon shows, tickets are $12 for youth, $13 for seniors, and $15 for adults. Back for this show are 21 reservable bean bags, which are arranged on the floor between the stage and the main audience seating. Bean bag tickets are intended for youth, but anyone is welcome to sit in them and the cost is $10 for evening shows and $8 for matinees. Tickets are available anytime online at, or can be purchased at JCAHC during regular hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Related Seussical Art classes for all ages are being offered at JCAHC prior to Saturday matinee shows on Dec. 9, Dec. 16, and Dec. 23. Participants can make their own mini version of our bird girl puppets before the shows. These programs begin at 1 p.m. and last about an hour. Participants supply the creativity, and all materials are included. The cost is $10 per person.
