There’s no shortage of fall- and Halloween-themed programs being offered by JCPRD this October and November. In all, more than 40 offerings are planned, including many favorites and a few new additions.

Returning favorites will include JamBOOree; Special Event Chili Bingo and several separate Halloween-themed Bingo sessions for 50 Plus; International Observe the Moon Night for all ages; Whimsical Woods for all ages; three outdoor Kansas City Symphony Concerts; the Mildale Farm Fall Fest and Lanesfield Historic Site Open House for all ages; and seven separate Public Hayride offerings for individuals and small family groups at the Oak Ridge Parklands on the north side of Shawnee Mission Park

One of the new offerings is The Hunt at Meadowbrook Park on Oct. 21, which has already filled, but a waiting list is available.  This family-oriented scavenger hunt will utilizing popular locations in Meadowbrook Park. Participants will enjoy pizza, games, and use a map to find items hidden throughout the park, followed by ice cream sundaes.

Also new for 2023 is an event in Ernie Miller Park called Haunted Tales, which will be a slightly scarier version of the previous Haunted Kansas event, but will showcase the park’s newly-renovated amphitheater.

“This event is meant to be for families with slightly older children than our Whimsical Woods Halloween event,” explained Outdoor Education Manager Andrea Joslin. “It is meant to be scarier than your typical Halloween event that features characters like princesses and superheroes. Visitors can expect a mild case of goose bumps and chills, but not too scary like a haunted house experience. It is perfect for 8 to 11-year-olds who want something a little more spooky. One adult per group of five children is required.  It is also appropriate for individuals or couples that want to hear some spooky tales and spend the evening in the park.”

Following the program presentation, participants are invited to venture further into the park and see the nocturnal side of the forest at night. Participants should dress for the weather.

Many of the autumn programs are popular, at least one has already filled, and most require advance registration.
