JCPRD Youth party options cover many interests

Posted on June 30, 2021 at 3:44 PM by Becky Burnside

What kind of birthday party would your child like when their special day comes around again?
Would it involve climbing to the top of a 40-foot tower or flying through the forest canopy on a zip line? Would it be a custom-designed event involving dance or theater? Or maybe it would involve navigating an indoor obstacle course and bouncing from a trampoline into a foam-filled pit.

These are just some of the fun and unique party options offered by JCPRD. In all, JCPRD offers birthday parties at more than seven locations. Parties typically include an activity and use of a venue for a set period of time. You’ll need to bring birthday cake and other food and drinks, as well as utensils, paper goods, guests, and gifts.

Gymnastics parties at the Mill Creek Activity Center are fun-filled, physically active events where participants take part in organized activities, games, and free play on our gymnastics equipment. Party instructors will keep your guests moving and smiling with various obstacle challenges and structured activities for one hour. The last 30 minutes of your party will be held in our Party Room where all can enjoy refreshments. Preschool parties are best for ages walking through kindergarten, while School Age parties are ideal for ages four to ten. For more information, visit the Mill Creek Activity Center Page or call (913) 826-2950.

"Our gymnastics parties are the perfect way to keep guests engaged during your birthday celebration,” said Gymnastics Coordinator Kendra Martiny. “Our staff handle all the activities, games, and supervision while on the gymnastics floor, which means adults can sit back and enjoy the party, too! Kids love getting to run, jump, and tumble across our gymnastics equipment and into our foam pit, and best of all, no gymnastics experience is needed for everyone to have a blast!"

Nature-themed parties at the Ernie Miller Nature Center for ages five to 11, will resume in late August and offer four different themes. Pick the Birthday Safari and stalk some wild Kansas critters. Choose the Snake Celebration to explore the myths and realities of these important reptiles. Check out our Magical Party for young wizards, or get sprinkled with fairy dust at our Enchanted Forest Party! The wildlife presentations last 30 minutes, include three animals, and are held indoors. Parties are held on Saturdays and fill fast. For more information, go to https://jcprd.com/840/Birthday-Parties-at-the-Nature-Center, or call (913) 826-2800.

“At Ernie Miller Nature Center not only do you get to party with real live animals, you and your guests will also get an educational experience discovering the secrets of wildlife,” said Outdoor Education Specialist Andrea Joslin. “Party participants love getting to see animals up close and personal. Some birthday children even decide to have guests bring presents for the animals at the Nature Center.”

A variety of adventure birthday parties are offered at the TimberRidge Adventure Center, located adjacent to Kill Creek Park.  Archery, BB guns, boating, and fishing parties are available for ages eight and older. Climbing or zip line parties are available for ages 12 and older. These parties take place outdoors on Saturdays, are first come, first served, and are available in good weather from April through October. Please book at least three weeks in advance.  More information can be found at https://jcprd.com/728/Birthday-Parties or use this form to request a party:  https://www.jcprd.com/FormCenter/TRAC-15/TimberRidge-Birthday-Party-Request-Form-67.
“If you have an avid outdoors child, we have the party for them,” said Outdoor Adventure Specialist and Certified Challenge Course Manager Lysa Holladay Dvorak.  “This is a great way for kids to share their favorite outdoor activity with their friends or get an introduction to an outdoor skill they would like to try.  Fishing is fabulous at TimberRidge too!”

Geocaching Parties for all ages make unique birthday activities as well as great scouting events, fun corporate team-building opportunities, or active family get togethers. JCPRD staff loan GPS (Global Positioning Systems) units, set the caches, teach partygoers how to hunt for caches using GPS, and are on site to answer questions for this modern-day scavenger hunt. Party favor included! These parties are available at Antioch Park or other JCPRD park locations. For more information contact (913) 826-3161 or email lisa.eagle@jocogov.org.

“Geocaching is great for all ages,” added Recreation Coordinator Lisa Eagle. “It incorporates technologies and nature, in a safe outdoor environment.”

The Johnson County Museum offers two types of parties at two different locations. Inside the museum’s Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center location, KidScape birthday parties for ages two to ten let participants enjoy play in the interactive KidScape experience area followed by time in a private room for cake and gifts. For more information contact the Johnson County Museum at (913) 715-2570. At the museum’s Lanesfield Historic Site near Gardner, Escape Room Parties are offered for ages ten and older. Participants can uncover the mystery at the school, save the teacher, and enjoy their special day! Lanesfield’s historic escape room experience is a great way to celebrate for teens and adults. This one-hour program does not include a party room rental, though participants are welcome to visit the nearby picnic pavilion during warmer months. These events are available Saturday mornings by appointment, and must be booked at least two weeks in advance. For more information, contact Lanesfield Historic Site at (913) 715-2570.

“Parents love birthday parties at the Johnson County Museum,” said Curator of Education Leah Palmer. “KidScape is the perfect place for young visitors to explore and play at their own pace. And the party fee includes museum admission for 30 guests, which means visitors of all ages can enjoy the museum galleries.”

Celebrate your next birthday creatively by choosing art, dance, or theater parties offered for all ages at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center.  For Visual Arts Parties, participants will work with a teaching artist or the theater and performing arts coordinator to design a one-one-a-kind project or production of your choice. We can also provide suggestions based on the ages of attendees and time frame of your party. Art supplies, set up, and clean up are all provided. Party prices are determined based on time and number of participants. For more information or to arrange a Visual Arts Party, contact Ryan.Bell@jocogov.org or call (913) 826-3163. For more information or to arrange a dance or theater Party, contact Elena Stephenson-Campbell@jocogov.org  or call (913) 826-3059.

Visual Arts birthday parties provide a unique, creative, and fun way to celebrate a birthday for any age,” said Fine Arts Coordinator Ryan Bell. “You can choose from a variety of art media like printmaking, collage, or watercolor. Our teaching artists will help tailor the details of the art project to your interests.”

“Performing Arts birthday parties offer a unique experience and memory for your kiddo,” said Performing Arts Coordinator Elena Campbell. “You can choose from various themes, explore creative drama and go on story journeys, or cut a rug with an all dance birthday party! All of these themes are guided by professional performing arts teaching artists.”

If you want to plan and carry out your own party plans but need a great outdoor setting, JCPRD offers 45 shelters for rent by the day or half day in 13 parks throughout the county. For more information, visit our park shelter page, or call (913) 831-3359.
