Three varieties of bags available all year long at JCPRD Registration office

If you’re getting ready for spring cleanup, or just the next time you or your household is in need of trash bags, consider participating in an on-going fundraiser which makes a big difference for the JCPRD Special Olympics program.

Three types of bags are available: packages of five 30-gallon paper lawn and leaf bags for $2.50; rolls of 25 yellow 39-gallon bags for $9; and rolls of 65 white 25-gallon bags, also $9 per roll.

And buying these bags is easy - just stop by the JCPRD Registration Office, located in Building D in Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch Road, Merriam, during regular business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can also call ahead at (913) 831-3359, and registration will have your order ready when you arrive. The registration office is closed on weekends and holidays.

For well over 20 years, trash bag sales have been one of the program’s main fundraising efforts, but after other fundraising efforts were cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, they have become even more important.

“All our fundraisers are very important to our Special Olympics program, and our trash bag sales have been even more important this past year,” said Special Populations Coordinator Jodie McMahon. “We had to cancel our two large fundraisers last year, and this year we have cancelled our large spring fundraiser which has always been held in a restaurant.  Our other big fundraiser, the Cars in the Park car show which is on our calendar for Oct. 9, along with Trucks & Big Rigs for Kids, which has also been rescheduled to the Oct. 9 date.”

McMahon estimates that between 650 and 750 rolls of trash bags were sold in 2020, which is even more impressive when you consider no sales were made for months during the height of COVID, and sales only resumed late in the fall.

“Proceeds from trash bag sales and all our other fundraisers are used to help offset the cost of our sports fees, travel expenses for tournaments, uniforms, and equipment,” she said. “We try to make all Special Olympic sports as affordable as possible for all our athletes to participate. Every roll of bags or packages of paper leaf bags helps!”

McMahon said the trash bag fundraiser has several regular customers.
“They stop in and purchase pretty large quantities that last the year for them,” she said. “One of our regular customers will purchase bags a couple times a year for herself and to sell to her friends, family, and neighbors. All our customers are great, but she's our best customer! Spring and fall are the most popular times of the year to purchase the paper yard waste bags, when people are doing yard clean up.  The white kitchen trash bags are becoming popular - we all have trash in the house to get rid of.  But the yellow bags have been popular for years!  I have used them when decluttering my house; they're great for filling with old clothes, and household items to donate.”
