The Theatre in the Park begins its sixth decade with a 2020 show lineup that includes stops in a storybook kingdom, afloat on the mighty Mississippi River, on the streets of New York City, among the Greek Islands, and more.
For its 51st season, TIP’s schedule consists of eight shows, including three indoor productions at The Black Box Theatre located inside the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, and five outdoor shows on TIP’s outdoor stage in Shawnee Mission Park.
Up first is “Be More Chill,”
an explosive, teen driven musical about the lengths we go to attempt to fit in, indoors at JCAHC March 20 through April 5. This show is Rated PG.
Outdoor summer productions will include: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella,”
which is on stage June 5 through 13; “All Shook Up”
on stage June 19 through 27; “Big River,”
July 3 through 11 with no performance on July 4; “Newsies,”
July 17 through 25; and “Mamma Mia,”
July 31 through Aug. 8. All of TIP’s 2020 summer productions are Rated PG.
The fall indoor production at The Black Box Theatre will be “Always… Patsy Cline,”
which is Rated PG, and will take place Oct. 1 through 18.
The December 2020 production at JCAHC will be “A Year With Frog & Toad,”
which is Rated G, on Dec. 11 through 24.
TIP holds open auditions for all productions and no prior experience in theater is needed to audition. Audition information is announced and posted on theatreinthepark.org
and Facebook, and also sent out via the TIP e-newsletter, which you can sign up for at www.theatreinthepark.org
Although specific films have not yet been announced, officials anticipate the popular Movies in the Park program will also return in 2020. Through this program, patrons can see popular films on a 40-foot screen on the TIP stage on selected summer nights when musical productions are not scheduled.
All performances of the final show of the 2019 season, an indoor production of “Frozen Jr.,” have already sold out.
Still to come is the Stars Gala New Year’s
event on Tuesday, Dec. 31, which promises a special evening of dinner, entertainment, silent auction, and games. The evening will culminate with a full-out New Year’s dance party and midnight champagne toast inside The Black Box Theatre at JCAHC. Not only will it be a fantastic evening, but a great way to support the arts in Johnson County. Several sponsorship opportunities for this event are available, and individual tickets for the Stars Gala are $125 per person. This event benefits Theatre in the Park by helping to fund scholarships for the organization's youth programs as well as improvements and enhancements for Theatre in the Park as a whole.
Much more information about all of TIP’s productions is available on the Theatre in the Park website.
