22nd Annual JCPRD Special Olympics Fundraiser is May 4 at Stagecoach Tavern

After skipping a year in 2018, the annual JCPRD Special Olympics Fundraiser is back with a new location, a different day of the week, and the same great cause to benefit! 

This year's event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the Stagecoach Tavern, 9617 W. 87th St., Overland Park, located near the Johnson County Central Resource Library. For this event, the restaurant offers a taco lunch featuring three tacos, beans, rice, salsa and chips, and a soft drink for $10. Guacamole, cheese sauce, and alcoholic beverages are available for an additional charge. 

"While it’s still a taco lunch as we have had in the past, this year it’s buffet-style," said Special Populations Coordinator Jodie McMahon. "We’ll have volunteers help serve. We will have athletes, friends, and families volunteering during the lunch. Overall, we hope everyone has a great time supporting our JCPRD Rangers Special Olympics team!"

The 2018 event was cancelled after a longtime former host of the fundraiser went out of business.

"It was pretty sad when last year's was canceled, so our hopes are it’s as successful as the past fundraisers," McMahon said. "We are extremely excited to have a new location this year. Stagecoach stepped up and suggested helping us with a fundraiser, and that says a lot for them.  A big thanks to General Manager John Jeffery for initiating the idea.   The best part is that our athletes, parents, families and friends are equally excited!"

Accounting for the skipped year, this will be the 22nd annual fundraiser for JCPRD's Rangers Special Olympics Team. Proceeds from this event and the Trucks and Big Rigs for Kids, which took place in mid-April, allow more than 200 Special Olympics athletes an opportunity to compete in local, regional, state, and national competitions.

"This fundraiser is incredibly important," McMahon said. "Each of our two big fundraisers helps reduce the cost of tournament travel, fees, and equipment costs, which is very important to ensure any athlete can afford to participate in our program."
