2020 Spring & Summer Camp Schedule

Spring Break Adventure Camp - Registration open

Group of kids at a climbing wallCome explore wild areas, find long forgotten trails, and learn the secrets of survival.  We will go canoeing, fishing, participate in team building and zip line at the challenge course at TimberRidge Adventure Center. Participants will need to bring a backpack with a nutritious sack lunch, water bottle, and comfortable all-weather clothing. The last day of camp we will have a cook out. Spring Break Adventures Camp will meet every morning at the Ernie Miller Nature Center. Programmed activities will begin at 9 am and conclude at 4 pm. For the convenience of working parents, supervision will be provided from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Activities may vary due to weather conditions. Parents will receive a letter describing camp activities, a supply list, and a medical form which must be completed and returned one week prior to camp. Enrollment is limited to 13 campers. Nature & Science: Biking Camp (Ages 12-15)

Experience biking trails with us! Campers will spend time riding trails at different locations along the Mill Creek Streamway Park in the mornings and swimming and boating in the afternoons. Participants will meet at Shawnee Mission Park Shelter #12. Campers will also learn about bike maintenance and care from a Park Police Bike Patrol Officer. Each participant will need to bring their own bike in working condition and helmet. For more information call Outdoor Adventure Specialist Lysa Holladay Dvorak at (913) 856-8849. Nature & Science: Climbing & Rappelling Camp (Ages 12-15)

Kid on a climbing wallExperience the 40 ft. tower climbing up and rappelling down. Learn how to tie knots, belay, and team belay. This instructional camp will focus on learning the skills needed for climbing and rappelling. We will swim and canoe in the afternoons. Each participant will need a health and liability form signed by a parent or guardian to participate. Campers must be 12 years old by the first day of camp due to the high-risk nature of this camp. Nature & Science: Fishing & Boating Camp (Ages 11-14)

Kids on Fishing DockDo you enjoy fishing? Join us and meet new fishing buddies. We will fish at TimberRidge Adventure Center and other JCPRD lakes. Participants will be introduced to canoeing and have access to pedal boats and kayaks. Campers will also learn about different baits, identifying fish, and hopefully catch lots of fish! Please provide your own pole and tackle. Campers will swim, but the majority of activities will be fishing and canoeing. Participants will meet at Ernie Miller Nature Center. Nature & Science: Outdoor Adventures Camp (Ages 11-13)

Experience four days of Outdoor Adventures with us! Campers will spend time learning outdoor skills: archery, bb guns, canoeing, fishing, swimming, climbing, and zip line. Participants will meet at Ernie Miller Nature Center. Each participant will need a health and liability form signed by a parent or guardian to participate. NEW! Nature & Science: Photo Adventure Camp (Ages 11-14)

Kids will participate in photo scavenger hunts and create two photo scavenger hunts during the week. Campers will have photos of landmarks around a park and go out as a group to take photos at the landmarks to earn points. Each landmark has a point value and the teams will compete to have the highest number of points. The groups will also go out to create a scavenger hunt at two different parks for the other group to complete. Campers need to be prepared to hike around parks and through the woods. Open toe/heel shoes are not allowed, and we encourage you to pack a pair of long pants. Along with visiting parks, the campers will also go boating and swimming. Nature & Science: Photography Camp (Ages 12-15)

kids with cameras at zooDo you love to take pictures and want to learn more about photography? Learn about nature photography with us and meet new friends with the same passion. Camp includes classroom-style instruction on camera basics and practical tips for nature photography. Campers go on daily adventures to practice skills in the field. Trips include the Overland Park Arboretum and the Kansas City Zoo. Camp concludes with a photo exhibit; parents are invited to attend and view the best of campers’ photos on display at Ernie Miller Nature Center. Participants must bring their own digital cameras for use during all activities. Other activities during camp may include boating, swimming, and nature hikes.
