The open space that used to be the location of the Park Police/Visitor Information building at the main entrance into Shawnee Mission Park has retained the name John Barkley. This space where the building used to sit was re-imagined as the John Barkley Plaza and the gateway to Shawnee Mission Park. This project provides parking, seating and shade for patrons to gather and meet, and create a memorial to John Barkley, who established the county park system and was the first JCPRD Parks Superintendent.
