JCPRD's Children Services Department has combined two great JCPRD events into one! The traditional Kids Klassic and the Big Bad Pumpkin Derby and Waterfront Bash is now one great event with four great races for all to participate in - named The Big Bad Pumpkin Races!

Still Honoring The Memory of Jordan Lee Brooks
Developed by JCPRD and Shawnee Mission School District's Briarwood Elementary, the Kids Klassic, now the Big Bad Pumpkin Race, was created in the memory of Jordan Lee Brooks. Jordan Lee was a student at Briarwood Elementary in Prairie Village who suffered from asthma and finally succumbed to the disease in the summer of 1998 at the age of nine. JCPRD is proud to host this event in Jordon Lee’s memory to guarantee a child’s right to participate in recreation activities regardless of their ability to pay

Everyone Is Eligible
The event is open to kids of all ages, that means grown-ups too! Adults are welcome to enter and are encouraged (but not required) to enter with a child. All paid participants receive a Big Bad Pumpkin Races T-shirt, post-race refreshments, a medal and will be eligible for prize drawings.

Our Three (3) Fun Cross Country Course Race Options:
1) The Five-Kilometer (3.1 mile) Run*
2) The Two-Mile Run*

*These cross country routes will have a clock located at the finish line with a time display. Times will be posted after the event on this page by Tuesday, October 20, 2009. All children who finish the five-kilometer (3.1 mile) or the two-mile route race will receive a medal.

3) The Half (½) Mile Fun Run: This free (no registration required) half-mile fun run/walk for kids six and under begins at 9:30 a.m. and will take place on a park trail next to Theatre in the Park, all children who finish the half-mile fun run/walk will receive a colorful finishers ribbon.

Awards - Everyone Is A Winner
Of course everyone who runs or walks in the event is considered a winner but there will be medals and or finisher ribbons awarded to all kids at the end of their walk/run.

The Big Bad Pumpkin Derby Race: 10am - 1pm

Our Big Bad Pumpkin Derby Races was designed for the spirited and fun loving pumpkin racer enthusiast. This event is a must-do in every fall season! Whether a competitor or spectator, our pumpkin derby guarantees to be one of your best fall experiences this year! Our event is more than just a day at the races. There will be food, hay rides and sidewalk mural painting and best of all admission to this event is FREE! It is sure to be a perfect setting for families to have a free and fun filled activity day at JCPRD's beautiful Theatre in the Park.
