The Theatre in the Park, Johnson County Park and Recreation District's premier outdoor theatre opened in 1969. Today, The Theatre in the Park, which is located on 10 acres in the northeast corner of Shawnee Mission Park, continues to have summer traditions that have entertained audiences for more than 40 years. Each summer, The Theatre in the Park presents four popular Broadway-style musicals at an affordable price.

The Pavilion at The Theatre in the Park The spectacular, new Pavilion at The Theatre in the Park is now available for special events. The Pavilion will seat up to 225 guests making it an ideal venue for weddings, family reunions, corporate dinners and other gatherings. The Pavilion can be rented alone or in combination with the Theatre. Any Ticket - Any Show Seeing a show at The Theatre in the Park just got a lot easier! You know you want to see a show but you aren't quite sure which one. That's ok. Stand in line at the box office only ONE TIME - Buy ALL the tickets you need for the season in one visit... then JUST SHOW UP to the show of your choice! It's that easy. Reserve Chairs Back by popular demand! Leave your lawn chair at home and still get a great seat. Arrive right before the show begins and still be guaranteed a spot in the “chair area” with prime seating! Reserved chairs may be purchased online in advance or if available, by visiting the box office the night of the performance. Book early, availability is limited! Reserved Parking Convenient and close to the theatre entrance, reserved parking availability is specific to particular show nights. Please select the date of the show you'll be attending. The Theatre in the Park was started through the efforts of volunteers and continues today. All of the performers on our stage, in the orchestra pit, as well as most of the people behind the scenes are volunteers. Each year, more than 1,500 volunteers contribute over 50,000 hours of their time to our program. Individuals as well as volunteer groups from area churches, service organizations, and businesses have fun on summer nights helping out in various ways. Seasonal Employment Opportunities The Theatre in the Park also offers a wide variety of seasonal employment opportunities. Creative talents are used for set design, sound, lighting, costumes and props. Each summer, dozens of teens enjoy their first job working at the Theatre box office, in food services, or parking cars.
