Be aware of your surroundings. There are many multi-use
trails in District parks, and many of them offer secluded and scenic
areas. While using the trails, it
is important to remember that the parks receive over six million
visitations each year, so it is not unusual to encounter other people,
even in
seemingly secluded areas.
Always be alert. If you see anyone who makes you
feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts and go the other way. Better
yet, share your outdoor experience by walking with friends or family
members and report anything you feel is suspicious to the park police.
Burglars are park users, too. Burglars use parks
to prey on those who are using the park legitimately. Remember
to
lock
your
car and
do not leave valuables in the passenger compartment. Auto burglars
sometimes frequent park areas because they know that people hiking,
fishing, boating and other park users may be a considerable distance
away from their cars for extended periods of time.
